Following the continuous aftershocks from the 403 earthquake, many inquiries about seismic isolation buildings were received. Despite Japan's long history with this technology, it seems many people in Taiwan are still unfamiliar with it.
Indeed, seismic isolation buildings are not a new technology. They are a well-developed and widely applied technology globally, especially in earthquake-prone countries like Japan, where they have been used for over half a century. Moreover, many countries have clear laws mandating seismic isolation for public buildings and essential facilities—such as administrative agencies and hospitals—to ensure functionality immediately after an earthquake. Several major earthquakes and related data and reports have proven the advantages of seismic isolation buildings.
The 921 earthquake changed Taiwanese perceptions and awareness of earthquakes. Over the past 25 years, Taiwan has strengthened its building regulations to emphasize seismic standards. Taiwan Matsuzawa has consistently worked to promote and popularize seismic isolation in construction.
